In the times of our Prophet (ﷺ), there used to be sweet water well in the city of Madinah and our Prophet (ﷺ) used to like its water. It was known as ‘Bir Roma’ i.e. Well of Roma.
The mentioned well was the property of a jew at that time, who used to sell water at a considerably high price and the poor inhabitants of Madinah were bound to pay such high to get water for their needs. Our Prophet (ﷺ) announced the glad tidings for the person who would buy the well and endow it for the people of Madinah.
What else a believer could dream more than the assurance of paradise from Prophet (ﷺ). At this occasion, Syedena Uthman رضي الله عنه was the companion who got blessed with this honor. He approached the Jew owner of the well and offered the deal per the owner’s demand, but got him reluctant to sell as the well being the major source of income for him. Syedena Uthman رضي الله عنه then offered for a deal in half for the shared ownership of the well on the day wise turn for which the jew agreed at a sum of huge money.
On his turn, Syedena Uthman رضي الله عنه used to set it free for the folks of Madinah Munawarrah, whereas jew used to monetize the well the same way upon his turn. Soon, the masses scheduled their need per the availability of water in Syedena Uthman’s turn leaving jew with no option other than selling the well completely to
Syedena Uthman رضي الله عنه who gladly paid the second price of the well and dedicated for the people. Since then, the well got fame as “Bir Uthman” (Well of Syedena Uthman).
This earned the assurance of paradise for Syedena Uthman رضي الله عنه , who owns the honor of being received the same on several other occassions from Prophet (ﷺ) as well.
